Ahead of Women’s Equality Day, August 27, Forbes’ released its first-ever ranking of female-friendly employers, ranging from education and retail to, yes, even bro-heavy industries like finance and tech. These companies are committed to gender equality.
In the age of #MeToo, women’s equality, especially in the workplace, is, undoubtedly, top-of-mind for many female job seekers. And many companies are not only starting to take notice; they’re also taking action.
To name a few companies that have recently stepped things up, Citigroup and Wells Fargo pledged equal pay for women, Cognizant and Kaiser Permanente promised women more opportunities for advancement at the 2018 Makers Conference, and Dollar General and Boston Scientific updated its family leave policies.
But then there are some companies that have been getting it right all along. For the first time, Forbes, in partnership with market research company Statista, recently identified and ranked America’s best employers for women. To compile the list, 25,000 women were surveyed and asked to rate their employers on criteria, including working conditions, diversity, likelihood they’d recommend their company to others, parental leave, discrimination, and pay equity.
Despite being part of a male-dominated industry, the rankings identified the No. 1 company for women as investment management and insurance firm Principal Financial Group. Forbes credited flexible work schedules, prenatal care programs, an onsite childcare center, and the company’s overall commitment to equality as the winning formula that helped the Des Moines, Iowa-based company secure the top spot.
Many other companies from bro-heavy industries—namely, tech—made the list, too, including Google, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Cisco Systems. Not to mention, health care, despite being an industry beleaguered with frequent inequality and discrimination, made a strong showing with Penn Medicine and BayCare Health System both cracking the top 10.
Regardless of your gender identity, equality in the workplace is something that everyone can benefit from. Take a look at the top 50 female-friendly companies below and start applying to jobs today.
